GOURMET GREATNESS

The OYSTER is your world at B&G Oysters, LTD, where at least a dozen of their forty-variety list are offered daily. They’re so insanely fresh, the list even changes between lunch and dinner service.

Atmosphere: 8
B&G Oysters, LTD. in the South End is a designer seafood bar with raised seats lining the marble counters that wrap around the sunken exhibition kitchen. Petit black tables fill the rest of the boutique eatery, with metallic walls and delicate tiles adding to the edgy, rich atmosphere.
Menu: 9
The seafood focused menu ranges from fried stuff to fancy plates. B&G is best known for an astounding oyster selection with at least a dozen varieties listed by AM and PM availability.
Appetizers: 9
Awesome appetizers included fried Ipswich clams in a golden garb served with tangy homemade tartar and herb-dusted fries. Steamed mussels topped with crispy fried leeks were irresistible, dunked in a winey saffron cream sauce. Phantom also slurped back an invigorating raw bar oyster tasting that started with sweet Dennisports, progressed to briny Spinney Creaks and gamey Newport Cups, finishing with sweet, creamy Kumamotos.
Entrees: 9
Next, the abundant, lemony lobster roll is a no-frills, mostly tail meat luxury with just enough mayo and a sprinkle of scallions on a buttery toasted bun. The day boat cod bolstered its seasoned, seared, and incredibly soft, mild center with a burst of yummy bacon and wilted chard.
Dessert: 7
Dessert didn’t measure up to the B&G standard. The dinky banana split assembled tiny scoops of ice cream and a few slices of fruit, though crunchy candied walnuts and chocolate sauce made tasting toppings.
Portions: 7
Portions are on the slim side, but oysters come by the piece so you can upgrade to any quantity.
Service: 9
Outstanding servers ask right away if you’re there for the oysters, and they’re happy as a clam to divulge the details of every one by origin, taste, and mouthfeel.
Cleanliness: 9
Also exceptional, cleanliness stretched from the flame jumping exhibition kitchen to the spiral staircase leading to an underground bathroom.
Value: 7
Prepare to shell out for some shells. Twenty-four bucks for their lobster roll is excessive, but entrees have a good spread from $13 to $24. Oysters cost $2.25 each.
Location: 8
B&G has $16 valet parking on Tremont Street, but the main entrance is on Waltham Street across from its South End sister, The Butcher Shop.
